A spectral, existential noir set against the aging irons of Coney Island and old guard lions of hip hop and silent film, Broken Land, a Brooklyn Tale tracks the singular odyssey of would-be sleuth and soon-to-be wordsmith, Salvatore Massimo Lunezzi. Prompted by an enigmatic phone call from a writer-friend claiming to be dead, Lunezzi launches an investigation that leads him to Ghostwriters, Inc., a company selling inspiration to struggling writers through the medium of “ghosting.” From Buster Keaton to Arthur Rimbaud, a boozy and brilliant dwarf to an enchanting femme fatale, Lunezzi is drawn deeper and deeper into the soul of story where fiction and reality inevitably converge.

Very poetic and artsy author. I didn't really connect with the characters or story. Was an okay read but I could have lived without it.

Since I'm reviewing a book that deals on one of its many levels with the struggle for inspiration, it's appropriate that I've spent the last 5 minutes staring blankly at my monitor, trying (and failing) to come up with a way to describe it or the effect it had on me. Broken Land starts out in a deceptively straightforward way it seems to be a story set firmly in the hard-boiled detective genre with all the accompanying conventions, but soon opens out into ideas and themes that go way beyond mere genre writing and ends up with a voice all its own, while still somehow maintaining a pulp fiction tone. The economy with which it's written is really astonishing. From character development to wrestling with some truly Big Ideas, it's all handled in such a seemingly simple way that it starts to feel like Biscello is using extra space-time dimensions to fit in all the things he's writing about in less than 150 pages, yet nothing ever feels forced or crammed-in. This was one impressive first novel. I'm looking forward to the next one.
John Biscello, seems to view the world like a pilot, ten degrees at a time across his horizon, and then presents a viscerally accurate description of what he sees. He loves to make the reader squirm in trying to get a bead on his characters, but leaves you to design your own ending.

If you were lucky enough to have attended any of his plays; "The Best Medicine" or "Chaplin in Wonderland," (especially created for kids to perform,) you will have some idea of the fragmented fantasy he is capable of. If you have not, treat yourself to a great read with characters that might remind you of someone you know, or don't ever want to.

Either way,you will be amazed at the genius in Biscello's ability to charm you with the ordinary, through humor.

Good writing is always worth the read. You might walk away scratching your head, but you will be entertained.
Sal, who has a word allergy, gets a mysterious phone call from his old writer pal Jimmy who informs him that he is now dead. When Sal informs Jimmy that he can’t be dead since he’s talking to him, Jimmy tells him that he has been split in fractals. So begins this quirky and humorous read. As Sal undertakes to investigate Jimmy’s story, I was vastly entertained by the writing style which is written in first person including the dialogue which turns out to be highly conversational, and seemingly purposeless. It is rather like reading scenes out of a Twin Peaks script. If the reader can hang on, this Bukowski/Kerouac style brings on bevy of unusual characters such as ghostwriter’s rep Arnold, who sends real ghosts to clients suffering writer’s block, Clare the Para Normalizer, the beautiful Anna who knows the words to every lullaby, Rico; hustler- supreme and clothing store price tag changer, and Henry, the dwarf -artist with an insatiable appetite for booze and women. You may surely enjoy Sal’s travails as he tries to make sense of his new curious life or as he sometimes just pauses to drink a cup of smoky Russian tea and look out at the night…
On page one of John Biscello’s Broken Land he writes “Anyway, if I had an office and it had been a rainy Tuesday, then a tragic blonde with legs like scissors strong enough to cut a flesh-and-blood man in half might have walked in… but that’s not the way this story begins.” This remarkably well-written novel is brimming with offbeat poetry.

Salvatore, the narrator, begins the story by taking on the case of his missing writer-friend, Jimmy. Jimmy calls Sal to tell him that he’s dead, and the bizarre phone call inspires Sal to investigate. He claims he’s not quite an investigative journalist, or a private eye, but simply calls himself “curious.” And so the story follows this curious narrator though New York on an unusual journey to find his friend.

Let's just say Ian not an avid reader but I read this book in two days I could not put it down it was real .an believable me the bastard lol I am so very proud of you love you son Giovanni the lead role is cross between Johnny depp and woody allen .
A surrealistic, magical tale about a man in flux, I found it a page turner and an intweresting character analysis. What writer doesn't want his or her own muse? And what price does one have to pay for the privilege? Is it a privilege? The author addresses the writer's suffering and inner life. Fascinating stuff!
This is a gripping story with a host of well-defined characters, written in language that at times is almost poetic, and at another times is quite funny. It has elements of noir, mystery, science fiction, and romance, and all in all is a good read.
Very poetic and artsy author. I didn't really connect with the characters or story. Was an okay read but I could have lived without it.
